The Things You Left Behind

by Frank Migliorelli and The Dirt Nappers

The things you left behind are nailed up on the wall the things you left behind still echo in these halls I’m the last man standing-with the things you left behind The things you left behind-show what there used to be But the things you left behind ain’t no good to me They’re just the painful reminders-the things you left behind its hard to keep it all together when it’s fallen thru the cracks The writing on the wall says you’re never coming back I should’ve seen it coming but they say that love is blind Now I’m sifting through the rubble of the things you left behind The things you left behind still rattle in my brain The things you left behind might drive this man insane What am I’m i to do with the things you left behind Try and put it back together-but it shattered just like glass Cant figure out a reason but you know it never lasts Trying to find a way back to another place and time- but i’m tangled in the wreckage One of the things you left behind-is a broken piece of man That just the kind of thing that you’d never understand I’m tryin hard to sort through the mess-the things you left behind- All the things you left behind weigh heavy in my heart And the things you left behind are tearing me apart Can’t put it in the past With all the things you left behind All the things you left behind-were from some fairy tale affair They’re lying in our bed and they’re strewn all down the stairs I can’t pack them all away Alll the things you left behind

She Moves Like a Mystery She moves like a mystery- to places I can't find Lipstick traces and fingerprints-is what she leaves behind She disappears in the shadows, and I don't know what to do She leaves me with her perfume scent- and that's my only clue And I can't read her mind and I cant find the lines That tell the secrets in her eyes And every twist and turn, every kiss that burns, Are wrapped up-in a beautiful disguise She reads like a movie script-across a silver screen And she plays it to the camera- when she's staring back at me She speaks like a sonnet- in crafted measured lines Each word is chosen-with a rhythm and a rhyme Bridge: And this old typewriter won't help me turn a phrase 'Been staring at the page so long that the night's turned into day- I'm so lost and tangled, in her twisted lover's net-but the final chapters-ain't been written yet- Instrumental Bridge: And I can't read her mind and I cant find the lines That tell the secrets in her eyes And every twist and turn, every kiss that burns, Are wrapped up-in a beautiful disguise She moves like a mystery- to places I can't find Lipstick traces and fingerprints-is what she leaves behind She disappears in the shadows, to places I can't see She moves like mystery-a mystery to me (3x)

Take It Back 03:38
They take another nickel, they squeeze another dime Pint of blood from a stone-they’re takin’ their sweet time They always seem to get a little more than what they need Nothings ever left when it comes to you and me Living in a town where no one knows your name You thought you were a player but your were never in the game You can’t find a reason to stay and stick around You try and take a step -they knock you to the ground I Wanna Take it Back- I Wanna Take it Back-for me I Wanna Take it Back- No I won't let them take another piece of my soul from me I’m drinking watered down beer, and sipping cheap red wine I bite off more than I can chew-and I swallow it just fine Even if it kills me-I’m not wasting any time I’m not waiting round for ever-I’m not standing on their line Now I’m turning off the TV-I’m hanging up the phone I’m feeling anti-social- but I don’t want to be alone I’ll find another way to see the forest from the trees I’m fighting for survival and I’m doing what I please I Wanna Take it Back- I Wanna Take it Back-for me I Wanna Take it Back- No I won't let them take another piece of my soul from me I Wanna Take it Back- I Wanna Take it Back-for me I Wanna Take it Back- No I won't let them take another piece of my soul-

Whiskey and an old guitar-A blue line can take you pretty far A west wind- puts you in the mood I’m tyin’ up these laces, following the soles Of these vagabond shoes London & Kerouac- You can’t lose, with a pair of Jacks Don’t know-if I’m coming back I’m tyin’ up these laces, following the soles Of these vagabond shoes So many miles left behind- So many faces lost in time Don’t matter where I go to sleep- There’s still a road, still a road, in the morning, waiting for me So many miles left to find- So many places left behind Don’t matter where I go to sleep- There’s still a road, still a road, in the morning, waiting for me Whiskey and an old guitar-A blue line can take you pretty far A west wind- puts you in the mood I’m tyin’ up these laces, following the soles, take me to new places In my vagabond shoes

There was a time she had a lover-now just a shadow of a man-Find a way to change your cover Just be careful how you land she feels she’s had it rough -she think she’s had enough Throwing caution to the breeze-She left him on his knees Yea she lets the night come down Feels it falling all around her She feels the darkness grow inside she can feel a fire raging in her heart And she doesn’t need a place to hide She was hoping for a lover & another second chance she didn’t need another Man who’d wanna tie her hands she’s not looking for forgiveness She’s not afraid to change her plans-she’s not that kind of woman She doesn’t need that kind of man

I Wanna Know 03:51
Why you walking that way cant you hear what I say Don't You wanna try can't you tell me why you want to be alone I've been tryin' to talk to you -tryin' figure out Can't you tell me what you got on your mind? I've been trying to understand why you might need another man All the things that you keep inside make you want to turn the tide Once upon a time we used to talk about the dreams- the hopes and the schemes and the only thing that mattered was me and you Nothing in the past could ever hold us down And all the things I wanted so bad I thought you wanted them too Now you want me to understand as I watch you take it all from my hand You're telling me that you've changed the plan, You put your faith in another man I wanna know-what he does for you I wanna know the things that he says are true I wanna know if you think we're through But most of all-What ever happened to me and you I'm watching time slip-I'm losing my grip Everything I thought was all mine is drifting out of my reach I'm down on my knees - I'm begging you please For one last chance but you tell me it's already too late
7.
She’s Not Coming Home He sits in the dark with his head in his hands There’s so many things he can’t understand And he replays the days and the nights and weeks Trying find where he lost all control There are somethings in life that you just can’t explain And somethings you’ll never know Bridge: She has a heart - and a mind of her own And she keeps it close to herself And you can’t catch the wind and you won’t pin her down You can have her all to yourself Chorus And this time-she’s not coming home No- this time, she’s not coming home He walks through the house and he looks for a trace He remembers her smile and still sees her face And he wakes in the night and he calls out her name But he knows he’s just lost in his dreams All the things that he had in the palm of his hand Now seem so out of reach
8.
Walkin’through town on a cold wet nite Knowin all along this just isn’t right The wind starts howlin’ as I walk down your street I don’t think twice as I follow my feet- No matter what I do- No matter what I try- You never let me inside So many nights I sit by your gate- from early in the morning till it gets too late To knock on your door-and walk inside- And pour out all the love that you want me to hide Bridge No matter what I do- No matter what I try- You never let me inside Chorus How long must I beg - How long must I plead Would it change a thing if I fell to my knees What’s it gonna take for you to give me- The key to your heart Verse 3 I’m not the type who’d steal your heart-take what I need And sell the spare parts Diamonds are forever-and so I am told Your love to me is more precious than gold. No matter what I do- No matter what I try- You never let me inside How long must I beg - How long must I plead Would it change a thing if I fell to my knees What’s it gonna take for you to give me- The key to your hear

Only Here Only here we seem immune to gunshots in the hall
Children huddled down in fear-blood splattered on the wall
Only here we pile backpacks in a high school parking lot

While the cries and screams still ringing through the echoes of the shots
Only here- why- only here? Only here we turn a blind eye- time and time again
Can’t answer that one question- When’s it ever gonna end Only here- why- only here? Chorus We only tear down all the places where children learn and play But the thing we should destroy is the fcking NRA
The falsehoods and the lies, the politicians that they buy- Thoughts and prayers don’t matter, too many people’ve died. Only here- why-only here? Every life cut down is this county’s bloody stain
Twisted laws and bottom lines and guns for the insane Only here we seem immune to gunshots in the hall Children hiding out in fear-their blood splattered on the wall Only here- why-only here? America, America, this is our greatest shame
So many lives have been cut short- With endless waves of pain Only here- Why only here?

Every Bar Tender in Town-Knows My Name I don’t drive down the street in a fancy car I don’t walk around this town like a movies star Don’t wear no big fancy diamond rings-Nobody’s in the crowd when I show up to sing But every bar tender in this town knows my name Yea- Every bar tender in this town knows my name The only time I sign an autograph is when the alimony’s due And if you buy me a round I will sit down and talk with you. That’s all I need in terms of fortune and fame-Don’t matter to me if I ain’t in the game ‘Cause every bar tender in this town knows my name Yea- Every bar tender in this town knows my name Bridge- I don’t have places to go- I don’t have people to meet I don’t have contracts to sign- Nobody knows me when I’m walking down the street Every bar in town knows what I like to drink There’s a barstool waitin’ for me and I don’t even have to think The bright lights of Broadway are way too bright-The neon in this bar makes me look just right And every bar tender in this town knows my name Yea- Every bar tender in this town knows my name
